The Food For Though Truck (FFTT) will allow outreach to extend from Natural History Museum of Utah’s (NHMU) formal onsite programming to an informal, innovative platform that reaches communities all over our state. It will target all counties, including rural communities where residents may not have an opportunity to visit the museum otherwise.
The Food For Thought Truck (FFTT) will use a classic approach to delivering content coupled with innovative programming. This will be achieved through customizable content, enabling facilitators to hand tailor programming to each specific event or location (ie. county, science, organization, fair, festival, etc.).
On-going programming
Food For Thought Programming will expand on the antiquated, and largely accepted community outreach model of 12-hour community festivals, where 30-60 second interactions are the norm. This will be accomplished by displaying a “daily special” of events for visitors to select from, engaging individuals and groups for longer intervals of time through innovative programming, along with providing a take away that will promote ongoing interaction between the individual and NHMU.
Based on the needs of the event, festival, partnership, etc, the Food For Thought Truck will hand tailor programming to ensure that relevant and tangible information is being presented to visitors. This will be accomplished by careful consideration of existing museum school programming (MOM) in addition to the implementation of new, interchangeable programming designed specifically for FFTT outreach.
Foor For Thought Menus
The Food For Thought Menu (FFTM) is a tri-fold pamphlet created as a take away for visitors to the Food For Thought Truck. This “menu” will include activities, interesting facts, a schedule of events in nearby areas, as well as a coupon to NHMU. The Food For Thought Menus will coincide with the science of the day, ie the Daily Special. The intention of these menus is to provide visitors with tangible material that will spark interest in further exploration of Utah’s Natural History.
Three science focuses will be used to prototype the FFTM.
PALEONTOLOGY
ENTOMOLOGY
GEOLOGY
A FFTM with be created for both children and adults. The material provided on both menus will be focused to the targeted age group in order to provide a relatable take away.
Target Audiences:
Children ages 0-12
· Tri-fold includes activities (gathered from the NHMU education dept), visuals, simple content/facts, coupon, schedule of upcoming events
Adolescents and adults ages 13-∞
· Tri-fold includes many interesting facts, visuals, coupon, schedule of upcoming events, and information about partner organizations, (ie National Parks, State Parks, Museums, etc)
Objectives:
· Engage individuals with tangible material
· Provide knowledge of Utah Natural History through the subjects of:
o Paleontology
o Geology
o Entomology
· Focus material on particular age groups
· Provide information regarding Partnership organizations (National Parks, State Parks, Museums etc) to encourage further exploration
· Include activities to further engage visitors

1) The first artifact I included is the first two pages of the proposal I have started creating for the Food For Thought Truck.
a) I included this picture because it shows the work that I have been putting forth to create the proposal.
b) The main purpose of creating this proposal is to pitch the Food For Thought Truck project to NHMU Administration.
c) Writing and designing the proposal has allowed me to develop skills using Indesign, improved my writing skills, and has caused me to do a great deal of research.
2) Although these are not photos of NHMU's Food For Thought Truck, they are photos of the mobile outreach truck my boss found inspiration from, Golden Gate National Park's truck.
a) I included these photos because they are very similar to how we want to design the Food For Thought Truck. In addition, they give insight to exactly how much work goes in to creating a truck of this caliber. There are so many components that go into creating a mobile truck, such as obtaining the truck, retrofitting it, the design, developing programming, etc.
b) The main purpose of these photos is to display the potential look/outfit of the Food For Thought Truck.
c) I have started designing a potential Food For Thought Truck, (very roughly just for the sake of a visual for our proposal,) and choosing the materials, color pallet, etc, takes an acute attention to detail, patience, creativity, and proficiency with Indesign.
3) The third artifact is the "Ongoing Programming" and "Food For Thought Menus" section of the proposal that I have written.
a) I decided to include these because they display the type of programming we are developing, and the work that I have accomplished thus far.
b) The purpose of Ongoing Programming and the Food For Thought Menus are to provide an educational take away for visitors to the Food For Thought Truck.
c) I think it is important to include these because the majority of my internship involved creating programming material. It is essential that the Food For Thought Truck provides visitors with interesting, educational programming, and this is what we are currently in the works of developing.
